NGOS AND THE VICTIM INDUSTRY
Lem Monde, Nov 4. The misadventures of the French charity Zoe’s Ark in Chad early last year (1) finally opened to question the motives and morality of aid agencies. For the first time an organisation was criticised in the media, rather than lauded for its good intentions. The humanitarian industry’s success made it inev itable its power would be abused. After the 2004 Southeast Asian tsunami, people had begun to question whether non-governmental organisations had the competence to administer the huge amounts of money they received. Discuss this Feature The ideology behind humanitarian aid depends on three principles. There must be universal human rights – a worthy premise, but problematic. You create victims whom you can save. Lankan forces seize Muhamalai defence line
SIFY, 1-6-2009. Colombo: Sri Lankan troops today overran Tamil Tigers most fortified defence line at Muhamalai in Jaffna peninsula, in a swift and daring incursion gaining 500 metres territory, the army said.

The seizure of Muhamalai defence line came as government forces have launched a major operation to link up troops from Jaffna with those advancing from Kilinochchi.

"LTTE militants were caught in total disarray following concentrated armour and infantry assaults backed by heavy artillery which left scores of rebels killed and many others wounded," officials said.

According to military sources, the combined 53 and 55 Division troops have seized control over the entire LTTE defence line, North of A-9, while fighting still continues in the remaining LTTE positions, south of the A-9 main road. More...Discuss this story
